"Illustrative Artists" - 1st Grade
The first graders of Voyager Academy have the unique experience to delve deep into literary process and learn about the "business of books." Whether it is illustrating a previously written story in their own way, creating a new literary character within an existing story, developing a story based off of a single illustration or building their own storybook to market and sell, the students in our 1st Grade classes have a lot to take to the presses this 1st quarter. We'll be continuing to learn about the Elements of Art through these 1st nine week assignments.
"Building a Sketchbook"
*Our first step will be to put together a sketchbook to use for the remainder of our lessons.*
Harold and the Purple Crayon - Book Building Journey
As the 1st Graders began talking about the business of books, in the Art Room, we decided to dive head first into the art of story-telling as author/illustrators of our own monochromatic adventures, like young Harold from the imaginative story, Harold and the Purple Crayon!
The students began with a discussion about the types of LINE used in Harold's story, mainly focusing on straight, curved, zig-zag and wavy lines as our starting point. We practiced drawing these types of lines and planning our adventures in our newly created sketch books, before deciding on our final choice of crayon to take on our adventure and in our final zig-zag books!
After creating our zig-zag books, drawing our adventures, adding a title page, a dedication page and attaching our front and back covers, the students had a chance to read their new books to their classmates, like professional authors, just like Crockett Johnson, on a book tour!
